Zunheboto, December 16 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Zunheboto distributed high-yielding potato seeds and farm equipment to local farmers while conducting a residential training programme on natural farming.

In collaboration with the ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, the KVK distributed 5,000 kg of the ‘Kufri Jyoti’ potato seed variety to farmers under the North Eastern Hill (NEH) Programme to boost productivity. It also provided 13 pedal-operated paddy threshers to aid efficient harvesting and reduce labour for small farmers, stated a press release issued by Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, Principal Scientist and Head, KVK, Zunheboto, Nagaland University.

Simultaneously, a five-day residential training programme for Community Resource Persons (CRPs) and Krishi Sakhis under the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) is underway. The training, which began on December 10, features technical sessions and practical demonstrations on chemical-free, eco-friendly farming practices.

Scientists from KVK Zunheboto conducted sessions on topics including the importance of natural farming, seed production, suitable crop selection for the district, nutritional security, and the role of Farmer-Producer Organizations (FPOs). Practical demonstrations covered the preparation of bio-formulations, mulching, and vermicomposting.

Dr Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Zunheboto, highlighted the role of cattle rearing in natural farming systems. Bilingual technical folders and seeds were distributed to participants to support on-field adoption.

The initiatives reflect KVK Zunheboto’s integrated approach to enhancing farm productivity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the district.
