Mizo Students' Union (MSU), the second largest student body in Mizoram, has asked residents of Tuichawngchhuah, an "unauthorised" village in south Mizoram's Lunglei district, to vacate their village within this month.
A leader of MSU regional headquarters, Lunglei informed on August 9 that the villagers were already served "eviction order" by the state government.
He said that the MSU had asked the villagers to vacate their "illegal" village within August failing which the student body will hold no responsibility in the event of "untoward" incident.
He said the villagers should not encroach on a forest-reserved area but shift to Tuichawng village.
Tuichawngchhuah is a village predominantly inhabited by Chakma community, which is located under the jurisdiction of Tuichawng village council in Lungsen block of south Mizoram’s Lunglei district.
Declaring Tuichawngchhuah as being established "illegally,” the state government had served an eviction order to the residents on May 28, according to the MSU leader.
The government in its order had asked the villagers to vacate their village within three months from the date of issue of order, failing which they would be fined Rs 100 per day after expiry of the deadline.
Officials said that there are 25 "illegal" villages being established by "illegal immigrants" in Mizoram.
Of these, 16 were set up in Lunglei district, four in Aizawl district, three in Champhai district and two in Mamit district bordering Tripura, they said.
