Mon: Farmers identified for onion and garlic cultivation

Mon, November 4 (MExN): Farmers at Upper Tiru, Naginimora and Tizit under Mon district have been identified for onion and garlic cultivation under NEH Component of Onion & Garlic, SASRD, Medziphema Campus.

According to a press release from the Department of Horticulture, SASRD, the NEH Component of Onion and Garlic, SASRD,NU, Medziphema Campus conducted rabi onion seed and garlic distribution programme along with other inputs like water pumps, agro shade nets, battery operated sprayers and organic inputs to active farmers’ group at Upper Tiru, Naginimora and Tizit, Mon on November 2.

Looking at the consumption and production rate of onion and garlic in Nagaland, Dr Major Singh, Director of ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Rajgurunagar, Pune, Maharashtra; Dr Aastik Jha, Project In-charge and Dr Moakala Changkiri, Co-Project In-charge, NEH Component of Onion and Garlic, Nagaland Centre felt the need to popularize onion and garlic cultivation among tribal farmers of Nagaland, the department stated in its press release.

In this light, NEH Component of Onion and Garlic, Nagaland Centre identified Upper Tiru under Naginimora bordering Assam and Tizit under Mon district for popularizing onion and garlic cultivation looking at the favourable climatic conditions and also the hardworking nature of the farmers.

One of the best performing Rabi onion variety- Bhima Shakti and garlic variety- Bhima Purple was distributed to the beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for initiating such programmes in their area and assured full cooperation for the success of the same.

The programme was coordinated by Project In-charges Dr Moakala Changkiri, Dr Aastik Jha and Chumei Yanlem, District Soil Conservation Officer, Mon.
