APO seeks swift justice in twin sexual violence cases
Kohima, October 31 (MExN): The Angami Public Organisation (APO) has expressed grave concern over two alleged cases of sexual violence in Angami territory, involving rape in a taxi and the alleged sexual abuse of a minor by her father.
In a press statement issued on October 31, the APO said both cases were reported under the Chiephobozou administrative circle and called on law enforcement agencies to investigate them thoroughly and deliver justice without delay or prejudice.
Describing the alleged rape in a taxi as abhorrent, the organisation raised concerns over the safety of women and children using public transport.
It said taxis were expected to ensure passengers’ safety, security and dignity, warning that inadequate safeguards and the possibility of drivers exploiting passengers posed a threat to the public.
The APO urged the concerned authorities and taxi unions to ensure proper antecedent verification of drivers, introduce safety protocols and strengthen monitoring to protect passengers.
The organisation also described the reported sexual abuse of a minor by her father as “most shocking, inhuman, and depraved.”
“Home is a sacred institution. A sanctuary where a child is nurtured with love, care and values to become a responsible citizen. It is the first school of morality, security and dignity,” the APO stated, describing the alleged act as a betrayal of the trust and security associated with the home.
“It is a desecration of humanity, a betrayal of fatherhood and an outright assault on womanhood. It is alien to the Angami culture, Naga customary ethos and Christian values. It is inhuman, abhorrent and has no place in any civilized society,” it added.
The organisation expressed solidarity with the victims and condemned all forms of molestation, rape and sexual abuse.
It maintained that those found guilty of such grave offences should not be allowed to roam freely in society and urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that both cases were investigated thoroughly and impartially.
The APO also appealed to village councils, range organisations, youth and women’s organisations, churches and citizens to remain vigilant and work collectively to safeguard the safety and dignity of women and children.
