In the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examinations, Government Higher Secondary Schools (GHSS) in Nagaland continue compete on par with private schools, as evidenced by the recent NBSE results.
Notably, in 2024, GHSS Naginimora led the charge with a perfect 100% record for the past three years.
Analysis of the HSSLC 2024 examination results declared by the Board of School Education (NBSE) on April 26 showed three GHSS achieved 100% pass rates.
These schools were GHSS Naginimora and GHSS Chümoukedima in Arts stream, and Rüzhükhrie GHSS Kohima in Commerce.
The centurion
GHSS Naginimora continued its stellar performance in the HSSLC Examinations, achieving a remarkable hat-trick of 100% pass rates for the past three years.
This year, the school boasted a graduating class of 10 students, surpassing the previous years' numbers of 9 and 8, respectively.
The border town of Naginimora, under Mon district, also cemented its reputation for academic excellence as the United Christian HSS Naginimora joined GHSS Naginimora as a consistent performer, maintaining a 100% pass rate for the last three years.
A total of 30 students passed out from the school in 2024.
Meanwhile, after coming close to a perfect score in both 2022 and 2023, GHSS Chümoukedima finally achieved the record in 2024.
This achievement is even more impressive considering the increasing number of students appearing for and passing the exams.
In 2024, a total of 75 students from GHSS Chümoukedima took and passed the exam, demonstrating the school's exceptional performance.
With the 97% and 99% in 2023 and 2022 respectively, the 2024 achievement solidifies GHSS Chümoukedima's position as a top performer.
The icing on the cake for GHSS Chümoukedima was Ilamguale A Zeliang's performance, securing the fifth position in the Arts stream top-10.
In 2022 too, GHSS Chümoukedima’s Tianaro Kichu was listed eight in the merit list.
Meanwhile, in Commerce, Rüzhükhrie GHSS Kohima regained the top spot after narrowly missing out in 2023 with a 97% pass percentage. In 2024, a total of 33 students from the school appeared for and passed the exam.
Additionally, Rüzhükhrie GHSS Kohima performed well in both Arts and Science streams. The school achieved a 93.40% pass rate in Arts with 99 students appearing, and over 85% in Science with 75 students clearing the exams.
However, GHSS Zunheboto, which secured a hat-trick of 100% results in Science for three consecutive years until 2023, could not repeat the feat in 2024, managing only a 50% pass rate.
23 GHSS scores above State’s average
Besides, two centurions, a total of 21 GHSS had pass percentages above the State average of 83.16% in Arts stream with previous cent record holders (2020) GHSS Jotsoma, GHSS Chiechama and Rüzhükhrie GHSS Kohima returned with 96.49% (55), 95.83% (23) and Rüzhükhrie GHSS Kohima 93.40% (99) respectively.
Mayangnokcha GHSS under Mokokchung distrcit also delivered a strong performance, achieving a 95.65% pass rate despite missing out on the perfect score. A total of 154 students from the school cleared the exams.
Additionally, Mayangnokcha continued its legacy of top scorers, with Biseli Sangtam securing the number 5 position in the top-10 merit list this year. This echoes feat of Watisangla from Mayangnokcha in 2023.
Chujai P. from Bautüng GHSS, Longleng, also made history by securing a spot in the top eight of the Arts stream merit list. The school also achieved a 71.27% pass rate with 129 students.
Overall, the average pass percentages for government and private schools were 80.79% and 87.48%, respectively. This represents a slight decrease from 2023, where the percentages were 84.21% and 89.70%, respectively.
Meanwhile, a total of 16 private schools achieved 100% pass results in the 2024 HSSLC exams.
GHSS Outperforms in Commerce
In the Commerce stream, GHSS schools outperformed private schools with a 91.43% pass percentage compared to 89.38% for private schools.
Furthermore, aprart from the perfoct score of Rüzhükhrie GHSS , two other GHSS schools, Jotsoma (91.67% with 11 students) and Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire GHSS (90% with 9 students), had pass percentages above the overall state average of 87.67%.
A total of 7 private schools achieved a 100% qualifying record, while 9 others had pass percentages above the State average.
Science Needs Improvement
While the overall performance in the Science stream declined from 86.79% in 2023 to 80.88% in 2024, it's the GHSS that saw a significant drop, falling from 85.77% to 70.53% compared to private schools which went from 91.36% to 84.23%.
Accordingly, there was a significant gap of over 13.7% between the average pass percentage of government schools (70.53%) and private schools (84.23%).
As a result, only 5 GHSS schools had pass percentages near or above the state average, compared to 21 private schools.
Moreover, while 4 private schools had 100% qualifying records, none of the GHSS schools achieved the feat, indicating a need for a focused effort to close the gap with private schools.
