NAGAS! Beware least you forget the Covenant you have made with God in 1975!

 Duet 23:21; Num 30:2; Mtt 5:33.

“When you make a Vow to the Lord your God, do not put off doing what you promised. The Lord will hold you to your vow, and it is a sin not to keep it.”

“Do not break your promise (Covenant) but do what you have vowed to the Lord to do.” Mtt 5:33.

Rev.T.Alem meren Ao, Director of Mission and Evangelism, NMM, Dimapur, Nagaland, while writing the introductory note of the Pamphlet entitled- “Our Covenant with God for world Evangelization.” He wrote to say: “the church of Christ in Nagaland was founded one hundred and ten years ago. But we have failed to fulfill this task. We have done everything but neglected this task. Some churches of some tribes have done little but that was localized within Nagaland and in two neighboring states only. “World” was not at all their vision. Only seven years ago, church leaders in Nagaland assembled in Dimapur from March 1-9, 1975 and adopted a covenant with God and with one another to do World Evangelization. In 1977, the NBCC in its Annual Session at Pfütsero adopted a resolution to enlist 10,000 volunteers for World Evangelization. “In 1981, All Nagaland Revival Convention was held at Kohima from April 2-5, and adopted a covenant to do World Evangelization. The Covenant was implemented (endorsed?) by all the Nagaland Youth leaders and All Nagaland Baptist Women Union and every (Tribal) Association in Nagaland.

“We have Covenant with God and with one another to do the task committed to us. Therefore, this must be our supreme task. We must give our top priority to it. Every Church, Every Association, Every Youth Fellowship and Every Women Union must invest their utmost lives, times, talents and resources for the same. The Lord who committed this task to us has all authority in Heaven and on Earth. Holy Spirit who is the Power and the Wisdom of God is with us and in us. He is the Lord of the harvest. Fields are His, labourers are given by Him and He is the source of our total supply, let us, therefore, “attempt great things for God and expect great things from God.”

Exactly 37 years ago, the Nagas (Christians) stood to the last man before the great and glorious God, the Creator and the Sustainer of the Nagas, and they made the Covenant with Him! The Big Question is: Has every Tribal Baptist Association, Women Association and every Youth Christian (Baptist) Endeavour done their Inventories? Is every one concerned ready with a definite Record of Youth Commissioned, Consecrated and sent out for Missionary Outreach, the Missionary so sent, his/her name and the country he/she is assigned to? In 37 years of the covenant, what exactly is the work that we have done? In case the Lord asks any of the signatories of the Covenant- “what is it that I hear about you? Hard in a complete account of your handling of my property (work)….?” “37 years I have patiently waited, please let me know how you have honoured your Covenant.” “..For the Lord thy God will surely require it (the Promise/Covenant) thee; and it would be SIN in thee.”

Make a chart of 37 years and measure the Mercury of your giving for the Covenant yearly, then you will know your accountability to the Lord! We cannot cheat God. If anything is wrong, it must be set right at once. God is going to punish for anything that He considers as sin. “For the wages of sin is death.”

God in His own time, He allowed His Holy Spirit to move the Hearts of the Nagas for a specific work to be done, but because of their stubbornness, the purpose for which He raised them has become counter productive. In a Christian state, the people who profess to be Christians must ask in their hearts as to what is going to happen to them for this willful negligence! Is it not a shameful apron of sin on the Nagas?

The Nagas are sunken deep in a chaotic state morally, religiously and politically. We are intoxicated and confused with problems and issues that need solutions.

The old standard of morality-honesty, truthfulness, uprightness, courage, hardworking and simplicity are giving way to humanistic, secularistic and atheistic persuits. There is a very serious religious falling, a general decline of moral and political. We profess to be Christians but our hearts are full of hatred, ill-wills, violence and bloodshed. Jeremiah 31:29 says-“the fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.” Our own condition is truly reflected on this passage! The sinners shall be punished; they have no excuse- Rom 1:20, “those who profess to know God but do not honour Him, nor do they thank Him, and their thoughts have become complete nonsense and their empty minds are filled with darkness; they say they are wise, but they are fools; instead of worshipping the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles. And so God has given those people over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do shameful things with each other. They exchange the truth about God for a lie; they worship and serve what God has created instead of the Creator Himself who is to be praised.” In the 1st chapter of the Romans (Rom 1:21-24) we are shocked to discover that God had given up Man 3 times.

1.    when man willfully turned to immoral lusts and acts, He gave up man,

2.    when man turned to immoral deviations and vile affections, God gave up man; and

3.    When man turned immoral reprobate mind and polluted with unrighteousness, fornications, covetousness and maliciousness.

God gave up man! He has given him to corrupted minds, filled with wickedness, evil, greed, vices, jealousy, murder, fighting, deceit and malice, they are hateful to God, insolent, proud, boastful, evil thinkings, disobedient to parents, no conscience they have, do not keep promises, no kindness and pity on others- these were the way of life of God’s people! Are we in any way better than these people? God will judge- Mtt 10:15.

The Nagaland Baptist church declared Nagaland to be Christ’s- “NAGALAND FOR CHRIST” 40 years ago. Subsequently the Naga National Freedom fighters adopted “NAGALAND FOR CHRIST” as EMBLEM of the Nagas. It is unfortunate that the church, the state and the Nagas have derided and desecrated the Glorious Name of Jesus Christ. We have departed from His Laws and Teachings. From our mind set we have dethroned Christ and He is no longer the Lord of our life. In the midst of the bleak, black, depressing and terrible situation, the church is weak and miserably in effective in its testimony. The doors of the church are open to world line secular interests, love of money and selfishness has become the hall mark of life. The spiritual decadence, disintegrating Christian values, degenerating Christian identity are making the church like the Blind Samson! It is imperative for the Nagas to realize that ‘there is a person greater than the Nagaland for Christ, than the church, than the creeds, rites, the Tribals and so on.’ There is one greater than the uniqueness of the Nagas way of life. The degeration of the uniqueness of the Naga way of life is causing anxiety in the minds of all sensible Nagas. Elections, money and opportunity have made the Nagas as purchaseable commodities, corrupt, unreliable, selfish and opportunists. The God given qualities of honesty, truthfulness, hardworking, reliability and straight forwardness have been lost from our lives; we have sold out our heritage for cheap popularity and opportunism. This is against Christian morality and not in consonant with Naga way of life. The church should see the writings on the Walls. The God’s people must seek God’s intervention on their knees. “O Lord, revive Thy works in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember Mercy”- Hab 3:2.
