Dimapur, September 11 (MExN): The North East India Regional Bishops' Council (NEIRBC) has expressed deep anguish and pain over the continuing violence and suffering in Manipur, noting that lives have been lost, families displaced, and places of worship destroyed.
In a press statement issued by NEIRBC President Most Rev John Moolachira, Archbishop of Guwahati, following their annual meeting held at the Archbishop's House in Shillong from September 7 to 9, 2026, the council emphasized that no legitimate grievance can be resolved through violence, arson, or hatred spread via social media.
Cautioning that violence only breeds more violence and leaves behind deeper wounds, the Catholic Bishops of the 15 dioceses of North East India stated they cannot remain silent spectators.
Unequivocally condemning violence by any individual or group, the council appealed to the people of Manipur to immediately refrain from inflammatory speeches, rumors, retaliation, and all forms of violence. It also called upon leaders, along with the State and Central Governments, to embrace sincere dialogue, justice, and cooperation to secure lasting peace.
Urging all concerned to ensure the protection of every citizen, impartial humanitarian assistance, and an inclusive peace process upholding human dignity, the NEIRBC requested every Church institution to serve all victims without discrimination. Highlighting that peace requires justice, truth, and reconciliation, the bishops urged all people of good will to pray for peace and walk together on the path of forgiveness.
