Expresses concerns over proliferation of Naga political groups
Dimapur, October 31 (MExN): The Nagaland Gaonbura Federation (NGBF) has called for the withdrawal of all government restrictions on the appointment and functioning of Gaonburas (GBs) in urban and rural areas, while expressing deep concern over the proliferation of Naga political groups amid public hardship caused by multiple taxations.
According to a press release issued by the NGBF Media Cell, the demand was unanimously adopted at the Federation’s executive meeting held at Hotel Jaal Mahal, Dimapur, on October 30.
The meeting expressed ‘strong opposition and deep disappointment’ over the government directives, particularly those imposing restrictions on the appointment and functioning of Gaonburas in urban areas. The Federation viewed the measures as undermining the traditional institution, despite repeated appeals, representations and clarifications submitted to the government.
The executive meeting unanimously resolved to once again urge the State government to reconsider and withdraw all restrictions on the appointment and functioning of Gaonburas in urban and rural areas, and to uphold, protect and preserve the institution in its entirety, the release said.
The Federation also raised concerns over the Code of Ethics enforced by the State government for Gaonburas, stating that certain provisions appeared to infringe upon the fundamental rights and constitutional freedoms of citizens.
Describing the institution of Gaonburas as integral to Naga customary practices, traditions and the traditional system of village administration, the NGBF maintained that its historical significance, dignity, authority and legitimate role must be recognised, respected and safeguarded by the government.
As per the release, the House also expressed deep concern over the proliferation of Naga political groups, describing the formation of additional groups alongside the existing “thirty-odd groups” as unwelcome and a matter of grave disappointment when the Naga people are awaiting an early, peaceful and honourable political solution.
It further noted that the public was already facing immense hardship due to multiple taxations imposed by various factions, and appealed to all concerned to refrain from forming more factions and work collectively towards a peaceful and honourable resolution of the long-standing Naga political issue.
Separately, the meeting unanimously resolved to hold the NGBF General Session 2027 in Dimapur district and endorsed the Dimapur District GB Association (DDGBA) to host and organise the forthcoming session.
