Kohima, October 11 (MExN): The Nagaland Tribal Hohos Coordination Committee (NTHCC) has appealed to the Yimkhiung and Tikhir communities to exercise restraint and resolve their differences amicably following the recent outbreak of violence in Shamator and Kiphire districts.
In a statement, the NTHCC expressed deep concern over the situation and urged community leaders, tribal bodies, village authorities and civil society organisations to prevent further escalation.
“Whatever the underlying grievances or misunderstandings may be, the way forward lies in mutual understanding, constructive engagement and dialogue,” it stated, urging both communities to sit across the table and resolve their differences with sincerity and a spirit of accommodation.
“No dispute should be allowed to result in further loss of precious lives, destruction of property or lasting bitterness between our people,” the committee stated. The NTHCC also called on the Nagaland government to intervene without delay, ensure the safety and security of residents in the affected areas, and take necessary measures to restore normalcy.
It further urged the State government to ensure the effective implementation of existing modalities and establish clear mechanisms, in consultation with the concerned tribal bodies and village authorities, to address disputes and prevent misunderstandings in villages inhabited by both communities. “Timely intervention, mutual consultation and a clear process for resolving differences are essential to prevent similar situations from recurring,” it stated.
The committee appealed to both communities to demonstrate responsible leadership, stating that “the preservation of peace and the protection of innocent lives must take precedence over all differences.” Expressing hope that dialogue and timely government intervention would help bring the situation under control, the NTHCC stated, “Peace must prevail, and every effort must be made to resolve differences through dialogue and mutual understanding.”
