‘One Govt, One Tax’ reasserted

Naga Council Dimapur reiterates appeal to various NPGs, orgs or individuals to honour the October 31, 2013 resolution

Dimapur, March 12 (MExN): The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) today reasserted its firm stand on the “One Government, One Tax” public resolution adopted on October 31, 2013.

The NCD affirmation came in against the backdrop of what it termed as the rise in “multiple impositions, intimidations and collections of forceful coercive taxation particularly from businessmen/communities” by multiple Naga Political Groups (NPGs) in recent months.

Time and again, all concerned are reminded of “One Government, One Tax” resolution adopted on under the aegis of Naga Council Dimapur in unanimity of all sections of people in Dimapur, it said.

“The term, ‘One Government, One Tax’ literally implies only one Naga National Political Government which levies and collects a single tax public or business communities, and not by multiple Naga National Political Governments as of now,” the NCD elaborated.

The Council further said that under the under the aegis of NCD, there have had been several rounds of consultative meetings in regard to the prevailing unabated multiple taxations/collection and to remind and reaffirm the resolution.

However, it noted that different NPGs or individuals have turned deaf to “repeated fervent appeals by the NCD and various organisations/associations regarding the evil menace of multiple taxations/collections particularly in and around Dimapur and neighbouring districts.

It has become “absolutely impossible for the business or public to pay a multiple tax to countless

NPGs/organisations/individuals, it pointed out.

In this connection, the NCD directed business communities and public to immediately report to the appropriate authorities if any organisations or individuals are found indulging/involved in multiple tax collections or in association with any groups/organisations for stringent action as per law of the land.

Meanwhile, regarding the recent Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) statement that it would be compelled to resort to indefinite closure of all business establishments to express their resentment over unending heavy multiple taxations/collections, the NCD held that “confronting each other on any issue in terms of organising bandhs/rallies should be avoided.”

Several Dimapur-based CSOs and neighbouring districts had expressed vehement support for the proposed indefinite closure, it noted.

However, NCD stated that it never “encourages any associations/organisations for indefinite bandh or closure of all establishment/institutions in Dimapur city unless the issue/situation becomes extremely necessary.”

Nevertheless, it implied that if the “unbearable unabated multiple taxations” persists, the NCD and all the CSOs will be compelled to initiate appropriate step to safeguard the welfare of the citizens unless necessary steps are taken by various NPGs/organsations and the State Government.

Accordingly, the NCD once again earnestly appealed to the various NPGs/organisations/individuals to respect and honour the October 31, 2013 on "One Government, One Tax."  “Respecting the said resolution is respecting the sentiment of the citizens that creates a sense of relief in the hearts of the people,” stated the NCD in a press release from issued by its President Etsungmomo Kikon and General Secretary LK Peter Anal.

It further reiterated its appeal to the Government Of India  and the negotiating groups to resolve Naga Political Imbroglio at the earliest terming it the “very root cause of multiple taxations.”

Of all the areas in Nagaland, Dimapur is most vulnerable, it added.
