Phek identified for 'popularising' onion, garlic cultivation in Nagaland

Dimapur, October 20 (MExN): Given the favourable climatic conditions and the hardworking nature of needy farmers, the Phek district has been identified for popularising onion and garlic cultivation the NEH Component of Onion & Garlic, Nagaland Centre.

The Centre under Department of Horticulture, School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University, accordingly distributed Rabi onion seed and garlic to farmers under the district on October 20.

One of the best performing Rabi onion variety- Bhima Shakti and garlic variety- Bhima Purple were distributed to the beneficiaries, a press release from the Centre informed.

Other inputs like Agro-shade nets, battery operated sprayers and organic inputs were also given to three best performing farmers’ group under Phek district namely Unity, Uciethimi and Kutho-Phusachodu, it said.

Looking at the consumption and production rate of onion and garlic in the state, the Centre felt the need to popularise their cultivation among tribal farmers of Nagaland at the distribution function, it said.   The district was identified thereafter.

While expressing their gratitude, the beneficiaries also assured full cooperation for the success of the programme, it added.
