Pochury people urged to remain united, preserve cultural identity

Advisor Nyusietho Nyuthe addresses the gathering during the Pochury Tribal Festival Yemshe held at Lephori Village on October 3.

Lephori, October 4 (MExN): Advisor to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and Inland Waterways Z Nyusietho Nyuthe on October 3 called upon the Pochury people to uphold unity, strengthen relationships and preserve their cultural and linguistic identity.

Nyuthe was speaking at the Pochury Tribal Festival Yemshe held at Lephori Village.

Describing Yemshe as the biggest festival of the Pochury Naga community, Nyuthe said the occasion was a time when the Pochury people earnestly prayed to God for abundant blessings. He said the festival also provided an opportunity for introspection, forgiveness and reconciliation.

He urged the people to use the occasion to look within themselves, forgive one another and strengthen relationships. He emphasised the need to retrospect and amend one's ways for the common good, saying otherwise the purpose of life and living would have no meaning.

Speaking on the diversity of the Pochury community, Nyuthe described Pochury as a “land of diversity”, with differences in various aspects. Despite the diversity, he said, the people had been able to stand together as one, representing their collective identity.

Describing Pochury as the “land of fortunes”, Nyuthe said the region was blessed with abundant minerals and natural resources. He termed the Pochury a God-gifted tribe and called upon the people to work diligently and make proper and responsible use of the available resources for the development of the district.

Nyuthe also appreciated Pochury gazetted officers for their sincerity and dedication in discharging their duties. He said no complaint had been received against them and commended their conduct in public service. He urged the officers to continue rendering their best service wherever they were posted or assigned.

On preservation of Pochury identity, Nyuthe appealed to the people, particularly the younger generation, to make greater efforts to learn and develop the Pochury dialect and language. He stressed that language was an important component of the community's identity and called for collective efforts towards its preservation and development.

Nyuthe concluded by calling upon the Pochury people to remain united, preserve their cultural and linguistic identity, use their God-given resources responsibly and work collectively for the development and progress of the community.
