Prominent Dimapur citizen Pannalal Sethi passes away

An ardent Philanthropist and a social worker, Sethi was also a former NPPC treasurer  

Dimapur, May 15 (MExN): Pannalal Sethi (68), a prominent Dimapur citizen, businessman and an ardent philanthropist, has passed away. He left for his heavenly abode on May 14 in Varanasi where he was attending a religious event.     Born in May 19, 1948, he was eldest son of Late Kannayalal Sethi, reportedly the first Gaonbura of Dimapur and eldest brother of Dr. Bijoy Kumar Sethi.    

His sudden demise has sent shock waves amongst the citizens of Nagaland in general and entire Jain Community in particular, a press release informed.  

A progeny of prominent Jain family in Dimapur and an early settler in the State, Sethi foray into business started from Kohima by running a shop, later transcending into a noted tycoon and politician, it said.  

A committed social worker, he devoted his life for the social and religious causes as well as welfare of the humanity, and was committed in spreading the principles of peace and non violence throughout the country, it added.  

In state politics, he served as the State Treasurer of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee for 12 consecutive years till the year 2010.  

Sethi was one of the few original settlers who knew the problems of the State of Nagaland and till his last breathe, he served the people in different capacities, the release said.  

Apart from being a Founder Trustee of Merchant Chamber of Commerce Dimapur, he was also the founder Trustee of Shri Bharatvarshiya Digamber Jain Mahasabha and Founder of Shri Digamber Jain Chandra Prabh Navgraha Temple, Khatkhati, Assam and in many other social and religious institutions.  

Sethi is survived by his wife Shrimati Devi, two Sons Rajesh Kumar Sethi (Raju) and Rakesh Kumar Sethi (Ravi) and one Daughter Babita Chhabra with numbers of grand children.  

The Community has lost one of the most renowned and popular figure in the entire Global Jain Community, and the void left by his untimely demise will easily be filled for many years to come, the released further maintained.  

Meanwhile, it was informed that the rite for final journey of late Sethi will start from his residence, KL Sethi Cottage, Old Daily Market, Dimapur on May 16, 2PM onwards.

NPCC condoles

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee today expressed deep sadness over the untimely demise of late Pannalal Sethi, its former Treasurer and the father of its present Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sethi.  

“Late Sethi was a staunch Congressman till his last breath, who stood by the party’s principles and ideology and never wavered, NPCC President Therie said in a condolence message.  

“Irrespective of the prevailing situations, he made immense contributions to the uplift of the Party not only financially but also by devoting his time and effort towards social upliftment,” he said.  

Regretting further that his demise is an irreparable loss not only for his family members in particular and society in general, but also for the Congress Party, all the rank and file of the NPCC offered their deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.  

“It is our prayer that the Almighty God comfort and console you all in this time of grief. May his soul rest in peace!”
