Protect Dzükou Valley ecosystem while pursuing development

‘SAYO Ki’ at Dzükou Valley inaugurated

The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) inaugurated ‘SAYO Ki’, a house constructed by the organisation at Dzükou Valley, Nagaland, on September 26. 

Former SAYO President, Seyievilie Peter Zashümo while inaugurating the house, said the valley is a beautiful terrain bestowed by God and that humans, as its custodians, had a responsibility to protect it and ensure its sustainability.

He said leaders should strive to give their best during their respective tenures and “go beyond leadership” by contributing towards the long-term interests of the region.

Zashümo also pointed to the availability of various government schemes and funds, stressing the need to articulate requirements clearly and make appropriate choices. He cautioned that developmental activities should not come at the cost of the valley’s ecosystem.

“There are many things needed to be done, but we should reason on whether it will put the ecosystem of the valley to threat,” he said, while questioning whether altering the valley’s natural setting in the name of development would affect its long-term sustainability.

He called for proper consultation at different levels before undertaking development activities and suggested that amenities such as water sources, footpaths and solar lighting could be developed without adversely affecting the ecosystem.

SAYO President Zasitsolie Bei-o expressed gratitude to the frontal organisations of the region for their support in making the project possible. He clarified that the house was constructed primarily as a lodging facility for SAYO and leaders of the region. 

Describing the project as a long-cherished dream fulfilled despite time and financial constraints, he called upon the regional leaders to maintain the facility and ensure its preservation for posterity.

Bei-o also informed that a water storage facility with a capacity of 30,000 and 20,000 litres had been successfully completed. 

The programme was led by SAYO Finance Secretary Teisovi Thorie and Associate Pastor of Viswema Baptist Church Alodi Pusa delivered the invocation. 

SAYO Women Coordinator Neilau Thapru presented a special song and Health & Environment Secretary Zhokedu Zhotso proposed the vote of thanks. Leaders from the Southern Angami Public Organisation, women’s, sports and student bodies attended the programme.
