RIIN to protect legal Indian citizens, not harass them: Rio 

DIMAPUR, JULY 20 (MExN): The second consultative meeting on the exercise for creation of the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) was convened with various tribal bodies/stakeholders in July 20 at Rhododendron Hall, Chümoukedima Dimapur.

According to a DIPR report, in the meeting, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed gratitude to the representatives of various communities in attendance while noting that this was the first time that the state government and non Naga community have come together to discuss on RIIN. Rio explained that the exercise for creating RIIN was announced while realizing that a proper system is required for protection and security of legal citizens.

 “Our intention is to protect the legal Indian citizens and not to harass them," Rio added. 

Rio further observed that unless a system is put in place to check illegal immigrants, Dimapur the commercial hub of Nagaland would be in shambles and would not be livable later. He felt that the proposed RIIN would give protection to the genuine people and communities of the state who are permanent settlers in the state of Nagaland.

Rio also called upon the non Naga community of Nagaland to join hands and work together to make Nagaland a vibrant and peaceful state. 

Deputy Chief Minister Nagaland, Y. Patton in his address spelled out that the objective of creating RIIN was basically to prevent issuance of false indigenous inhabitant certificates and to have a complete record of the same for the state. 

RIIN would be the master list of all indigenous inhabitants and it would be prepared after an extensive survey by involving all concern under the supervision of the district administration, Patton informed. 

The Deputy CM also assured that the entire exercise for RIIN is being carried out in everybody's interest so that the right of each and every citizen is protected. The state government assures every citizen that no community would be discriminated against and no decision concerning the exercise for creation of RIIN would be taken in haste, he stated.

Chief Secretary Nagaland, Temjen Toy said both RIIN and ILP will be an ongoing process where views and opinions of every stakeholder would be taken on board so that no community feels discriminated. He informed that a committee has been set up where issues pertaining to RIIN would be addressed and examined by the committee after serious study.

Among others, representatives from Assamese Samaj Dimapur, Agarwal Samaj Dimapur, Brahmin Samaj Dimapur, Bengali Samaj Dimapur, Bihari Samaj Dimapur, Nagaland Bhojpuri Samaj Dimapur, Nagaland Gorkha Association Kohima, Gurudwara Sriguru Singh Sabha Dimapur, S.D.Jain Samaj Dimapur, Maheshwari Samaj Dimapur, Meitei Samaj Dimapur, Muslim Council Dimapur, Oswal Samaj Dimapur, Chümoukedima Hindu society attended the consultative meeting.
