Kohima, July 30 (MExN): With the recurring collapse of NH-29 at Kisama posing an increasing threat to commuters and disrupting traffic, the Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) has appealed the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, to immediately intervene and initiate emergency restoration measures while warning that the highway has become highly hazardous for public use.
In a representation submitted to Deputy Commissioner today, SAPO stated that the affected stretch has once again suffered severe mudslides and road subsidence at the same vulnerable location, resulting in repeated traffic disruptions and raising serious concerns over the safety of motorists.
Describing NH-29 as a vital transportation lifeline, the organisation urged the district administration to dire ct the concerned authorities to conduct an immediate on-site inspection and undertake urgent restoration of the damaged stretch.
It further called upon the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the Public Works Department (PWD) to implement both immediate repairs and long-term mitigation measures to prevent recurring damage.
SAPO also stressed the need to expedite the repair and operationalisation of the alternative route to Kisama to facilitate commuter traffic while the damaged section remains unsafe.
The organisation sought regulation of vehicular movement, particularly prioritising heavy vehicles during peak hours, to ensure smoother travel for students, office-goers and the general public, while minimising further deterioration of the highway until permanent restoration is completed.
The organisation further appealed the administration to coordinate closely with Phesama Village Council for ground-level assessment, community participation and effective implementation of restoration works, stating that local cooperation would be crucial for sustainable solutions.
Assuring full cooperation, SAPO said it, along with all stakeholders, stands ready to assist the authorities in addressing the issue in the larger public interest and urged the administration to take prompt and decisive action to safeguard public safety and restore normal connectivity.
