DIMAPUR, MARCH 21 (MExN): A tragic road mishap on Monday morning resulted in the dead of a school going boy near the entrance of the Assam Rifles Firing Range in Dimapur. The deceased identified as Jongpongtoshi (5 years) was a KG – 2 pupil of Hope Academy, Duncan Basti.
Barriers set by the AR raises road safety concerns
According to the father of the deceased the accident occurred at around 8:45 am, when he was taking his two children to school on his motorbike (NL 07 J 0237). He said that he was coming onto the highway from the approach road leading to Lengrijan. Meanwhile, a truck (NL 04 A 3039) approaching from towards town was swerving to the right trying to negotiate the road barriers (on the left lane) set up by the Assam Rifles. He said that he lost control of the bike trying to avoid being hit by the swerving truck, as a result, and fell on to the road. His son riding the pillion also fell off the seat, onto the road and was runover, he said. His other son, a four year-old, sitting in front of him miraculously escaped with minor injuries.
Following the incident an enraged public removed some of the road barriers set up by the Assam Rifles. Residents of the nearby locality said that the barriers have been a cause of concern for road safety, particularly, for vehicles coming onto the highway from the approach road.
