Seminar on mental health at Pfutsero Govt College

Dimapur, September 18 (MExN): A one-day seminar on Mental Health was organized by the Anti Sexual Harassment Cell of Pfutsero Government College on September 17 at the at the college auditorium.

The guest speaker Dr Along Pongen, MD, Psychiatry, District Hospital Phek, spoke on “Mental Health, consequences of Sexual Harassment,” explaining how biological, social and psychological factors causes the illness, according to a press release received here on Sunday.

As per the release, Dr Pongen said that 19% of adult population suffers from mental problems, 46% in teenagers and 13% amongst children and that 50% of mental illness begins from the age of 14 years. He mentioned that there is a lack of qualified clinical psychologists in Nagaland as there are only seven psychiatrists working in Government service of which only five works in the field.

On the topic of sexual harassment, he spoke on its impact on ones mental health. He stated that a victim needs to validate in order to heal and stop blaming oneself as they did not choose to be harassed. He also mentioned some tips for friends of the sexually harassed victims, the release stated.
