Dimapur, October 10 (MExN): A 50-day skill development training programme in wood carving craft began at Indisen village in Dimapur district on Saturday, with 30 local artisans set to receive advanced training under an empanelled Master Craftsperson.
The programme, formally titled the Guru Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan Programme (GSHPP) in Wooden Carving craft, is sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, under the National Handicrafts Development Program (NHDP) - Skill Development in Handicraft Sector (SDHS), and implemented by the Nagaland Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation (NHHDC) Ltd., Dimapur.
According to a press release, the intensive training is designed to empower the 30 participating artisans with advanced craftsmanship, combining traditional heritage with modern techniques.
Scheduled to run from October 10 to December 7, the workshop aims to elevate product quality and ensure the rich heritage of Naga handicrafts continues to thrive.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials from NHHDC Ltd. and the Handicrafts Promotion Officer (HPO) from HSC Kohima. Addressing the participants, both the Deputy General Manager of NHHDC and the HPO emphasised the critical importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship, mastering intricate wooden carving techniques, and leveraging government initiatives to create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Throughout the two-month hands-on workshop, participants will be provided with all necessary raw materials, tools and a daily stipend/wage compensation. The programme also features continuous monitoring and inspection by officials from the Handicrafts Service Centre to ensure quality instruction and successful implementation.
