Kohima, November 3 (MExN): The Nagaland government has directed all departments, district administrations and implementing agencies to accept Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials shown, shared or verified through the newly launched “Aadhaar App” as valid identity proof, in compliance with a Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) circular.
In pursuance of UIDAI (Aadhaar Usage Division) Circular dated April 30, 2026, the state informed that the UIDAI has launched the “Aadhaar App” as a step towards enhancing digital enablement, according to a DIPR report.
The Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials shown, shared and/or verified through the app shall now be treated as valid identity proof, it said.
The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms, enabling Aadhaar number holders to show, share and verify their identity digitally. While sharing identity details with an Offline Verification Seeking Entity (OVSE) through the app, the 12-digit Aadhaar number is not transferred, the report said.
The app provides the option to share either complete or partial identity details in the form of Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials. The details so shared are legally valid under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which provides legal recognition to electronic records.
In light of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 and its regulations, Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials through the app are a legally valid form to establish the identity of an Aadhaar number holder, in addition to other forms such as the Aadhaar letter, e-Aadhaar, Aadhaar Card and m-Aadhaar.
All concerned departments, district administration and implementing agencies across the state have been asked to ensure strict compliance and acceptance of such credentials as valid identity proof for establishing the identity of Aadhaar holders.
