Kohima, September 15 (MExN): Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) in Kohima District have been given 30 days to register with the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), in compliance with Supreme Court directives and the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
As per the State DIPR, the directive was issued through a circular dated September 11 by Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, B Henok Buchem.
According to the circular, institutions and establishments will be classified as BWGs if they meet any one of the prescribed criteria: having a floor area of 20,000 square metres or more, consuming 40,000 litres or more of water per day, or generating 100 kg or more of solid waste per day.
The category covers a wide range of establishments, including educational institutions, government departments, convention centres, public and private sector companies, local bodies, hotels, hospitals, wholesale markets, industrial units and stadiums.
The circular requires BWGs to segregate and hand over dry, sanitary and special-care waste to the local body. Wet waste, meanwhile, may be collected and processed at source through composting, biomethanation or other approved technologies.
The directive cautioned that non-compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 could invite action, including temporary disconnection of electricity or water supply until the waste generated by a BWG is brought into conformity with the prescribed requirements.

Who is a Bulk Waste Generator?
A Bulk Waste Generator (BWG) is an institution, establishment or premises that generates a large quantity of solid waste or meets specified size or resource-consumption thresholds.
Under the criteria cited in the Kohima DC's circular, an establishment is treated as a BWG if it meets any one of the following:
Floor area: 20,000 sq m or more
Water consumption: 40,000 litres or more per day
Solid waste generation: 100 kg or more per day
Examples include educational institutions, government offices, hotels, hospitals, convention centres, wholesale markets, industrial units, stadiums and public/private sector establishments.
