The District Congress Committee (DCC), Mokokchung, organised a ‘Save Democracy’ protest car rally in Mokokchung on Monday, October 5, as part of the nationwide protest programme announced by the opposition INDIA bloc against the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The rally, which saw participants hoisting black flags, began from the Public Ground and proceeded through Sewak Gate towards DEF. The INDIA bloc had announced district-level ‘Save Democracy’ marches and demonstrations from October 2 to 8, raising concerns over the SIR exercise and electoral rolls.

Addressing the gathering, DCC Mokokchung president I. Temsu Jamir expressed concern over the SIR of electoral rolls and said the issue should not be viewed merely as a political matter, but as one concerning citizens’ voting rights.

Referring to developments in Goa, Jamir alleged that the Centre was exercising control over the electoral process rather than leaving the matter to the state-level mechanism. He maintained that the protest was only the beginning and urged people to remain vigilant regarding their names and those of family members in the electoral rolls.

Jamir asked the public to verify their names during the SIR process, stating that the DCC had copies of the electoral rolls for people to cross-check. He stressed that the window to raise objections was limited and urged citizens to act within the stipulated period to safeguard their voting rights.

“By raising our voices right now, we will get our rights,” Jamir said, while calling on people to preserve their right to vote.

The DCC also raised demands for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and sought the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Opposition parties across the country have similarly intensified protests over the SIR and demanded Kumar’s resignation.
