ESIC first Regional Board Meeting held in Nagaland

Eight Nagaland districts now covered under ESIC Scheme

Kohima, June 11 (MExN): Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) North East Region held its 1st Regional Board and awareness-cum-outreach programme for sharing information and knowledge with its stakeholders and beneficiaries about ESI Scheme. The programme was held at Hotel Vivor, Kohima on June 10. 

The Regional Board was attended by Moatoshi Longkumer, Advisor, Chairman & the Minister of Labour, Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Govt of Nagaland, P Sotsula, Commissioner & Secretary, LESDE, Govt of Nagaland, Anoop Khinchi, Commissioner & Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Govt of Nagaland and Employer & Employee Representatives. 

With this programme, ESIC aimed to get the ground level feedback and for suggestions to further improve the service delivery mechanism and healthcare under the ESI Scheme in all the state of Nagaland. The ESI Scheme has been implemented in the North Eastern states in 63 districts. Out of which, eight districts of Nagaland viz Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Chümoukedima, Niuland, Tseminyu, Wokha and Zunheboto have been covered so far. 

As the ESIC Scheme has recently been implemented in many areas of NE states, awareness about the ESI Scheme is low among the workers and their family members, stated a press release received here. 

The chief guest, T L Yaden, Financial Commissioner, ESI Corporation stated that ESIC is one of the biggest organizations in the World in terms of delivering Social Security to the workers in the form of Medical and Cash Benefit. She added that convergence of PMJAY with ESIC will go a long way in establishing Secondary & Tertiary Tie-Up in the state of Nagaland.

Pranay Sinha, Insurance Commissioner, NE Zone said that an ESIC Hospital at Nagaland may be set up once the Insured Person reached 15000 in the State and requested all the stakeholders to register themselves under the ambit of ESI Scheme.

“ESI Scheme is implemented in 08 Districts of Nagaland and providing services to 5321 Insured persons and 20646 beneficiaries in the state of Nagaland. Further, ESIC endeavours on increasing the ESI Coverage in the Non-Implemented Districts and providing better services to the beneficiaries,” added Robert L Guite, Regional Director, ESIC North East Region.

Dr Soumya Chakraborty, Dean cum Director, Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Kohima applauded the various benefits of ESIC Scheme and mentioned about the Ward of IP Scheme through which Seats are allocated for wards of insured persons (IPs) in ESIC Medical Colleges.

Advisor Moatoshi, who chaired the 1st Nagaland Regional Board meeting, in his concluding address emphasised on the need to cover a greater number of Employers and their employees i.e. Insured Person so that the workforce of Nagaland can get Social Security Benefit through the ESI Scheme.

The awareness programme was attended by many employers, employees and representatives of employers’ associations & employees’ union and officers from ESIC as well State Labour Department.

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, a social security organization under the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt of India, established under the ESI Act, 1948, has been a forerunner in providing social security to the workers employed in the organised sector throughout the country. 

Under the ESI Scheme, full and comprehensive medical treatments along with range of cash benefits are provided to the Insured Persons and their dependents in the contingencies like sickness, maternity, disablement, death due to employment injury & unemployment. 

As of date, ESIC is catering to the needs of around 4.1 crore Insured Persons and 15.9 crore beneficiaries across 694 districts through its infrastructure comprising of 165 hospitals, 1590 dispensaries, 08 medical colleges, 65 Regional/Sub-Regional Offices, 610 Branch Offices and 105 Dispensary cum Branch Offices.
