MCCPO cautions against illegal riverbed mining, water pollution in Medziphema Circle

Medziphema, October 6 (MExN): The Medziphema Circle Chakhroma Public Organization (MCCPO) has directed village councils, contractors, railway construction firms, and machinery operators to strictly comply with government regulations concerning riverbed material extraction and water pollution.

In a public notice, MCCPO pointed out to an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Chümoukedima on November 1, 2025, which restricts the use of heavy machinery for mining riverbed materials in the district.

Unregulated extraction of sand, gravel, boulders, and other materials poses risks to the environment and public infrastructure, including riverbank erosion, aquatic ecosystem damage, water source contamination, groundwater depletion, and increased vulnerability to floods and landslides, it noted.

It further highlighted potential damage to roads, bridges, culverts, and railway assets.

In this connection, the MCCPO urged all concerned parties to halt unauthoriaed extraction activities and prevent water pollution. It instructed village councils and landowners to ensure that no agency undertakes such activities within the Medziphema Circle without valid approval from competent government authorities.

The organisation stated that violators caught engaging in unauthorised extraction or water pollution will face the seizure of machinery, vehicles, and equipment, alongside legal prosecution.

The MCCPO added that it will cooperate with government departments to support environmental protection and natural resource management in the area.
