Medical team rushes to Jiribam after reports of ‘cluster level transmission’

A medical team from Imphal with rapid antigen testing kits was airlifted to Jiribam district bordering Assam where "cluster level transmission" of the COVID-19 pandemic was reported for the first in Manipur.


The team was airlifted by a chopper to the district headquarters and soon after they reached there, field works of investigation into the origin of the spread at cluster level had started, an official source here said.


The medical team will also start mass testing of people for the virus using the rapid antigen testing kits, giving priority to the police personnel on COVID-19 duties in the district.


The state government is also planning to set up a Covid care facility at the district headquarters. The same is likely to open on Wednesday by the state chief minister who is scheduled to visit the district headquarters for the purpose.


Meanwhile, with five more fresh cases detected, the total number of police personnel infected by COVID-19 in Jiribam district rose to 42 on Tuesday.


After as many as 28 police personnel of the Jiribam police station were tested positive for the virus, the authority of the Health department swung into action to trace contacts of the personnel while investigating into the origin of the infections.


During further tests as part of contact tracing, nine more police personnel were found positive for the virus on Monday.
