Nagaland Health & Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak along with the officials of the department today inspected the ongoing construction of the Mon Medical College (MMC).
The inspection team included Commissioner & Secretary H&FW Kevileno Angami, Secretary H&FW S Tainiu Khiam, Principal Director Dr Keveduyi Theyo, Joint Director Dr Kika Longkumer, and Medical Engineering Division Executive Engineer, Er Therouovituo Pienyu.
The team also visited the District Hospital, Mon, where the Chief Medical Officer briefed the delegation on the district’s healthcare services and the department’s ongoing activities.
Addressing the officials, the Minister stated that the District Hospital, as the designated teaching hospital for Mon Medical College, must be equipped with all the infrastructure, facilities and services required of a teaching institution.
He stressed that there should be no shortage of essential facilities to ensure the hospital is fully prepared to support medical education and quality patient care.
Following the inspection of the medical college, the Minister directed the executing agency to expedite the remaining works, stating that with the working season already underway, construction should proceed without any further delay.
He also assured the department and the contractor of the State Government’s full support for the timely completion of the project.
The team inspected the proposed water source, helipad, and various academic, residential and support facilities within the campus.
Er Pienyu informed the team that the project had been delayed due to the limited working season, prolonged adverse weather conditions and the devastating landslides in Mon district, which disrupted the transportation of construction materials for more than two months.
Consequently, the contractor has sought an extension of approximately eight months to complete the project.
According to the Executive Engineer, about 65% of the project has been completed. Major structures under construction include the medical college and administrative blocks, boys’ and girls’ hostels, the Dean’s and Medical Superintendent’s residences, staff quarters and the autopsy block, while the indoor sports complex, nursing college and guest house is nearing completion.
After the inspection, the visiting team expressed full satisfaction with the quality of workmanship and overall progress of the project. The minister and his team also held a brief meeting with representatives of the Mon Village Council and the landowners, in the presence of officials from the engineering wing, to discuss matters relating to the project.
