Zunheboto, September 3 (MExN): The District Level Committee (DLC) of the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD), Zunheboto, reviewed the district's drug situation at a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's office on September 3.
Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj, IAS, called for coordinated efforts among government departments, law enforcement agencies and civil society organisations to combat drug abuse and trafficking. Raj informed that police had seized 18,000 SP capsules in April 2026, leading to the arrest and prosecution of two persons under relevant laws. He also noted the involvement of a woman in drug peddling.
The Deputy Commissioner said unemployment and limited livelihood opportunities were among factors contributing to the involvement of some unemployed youth in drug peddling. He called for joint action to address these issues while creating greater awareness and opportunities for young people. He urged the Education Department to conduct drug awareness programmes in schools, particularly to educate students on the harmful effects of drugs. While noting the importance of maintaining the existing 500-metre drug-free zone around educational institutions, he said the broader objective should be to make the entire district and country drug-free.
The District Drug Inspector was directed to conduct frequent inspections of pharmacies to prevent the misuse or diversion of medicines and controlled substances. Senior Superintendent of Police Zunheboto Kupe Kapfo, NPS, informed the meeting that there had been no further seizure following the last major seizure and that no poppy cultivation had been detected. Kapfo called for better training of police personnel and joint exercises and checking operations with other departments to prevent trafficking and distribution of narcotic substances.
The meeting called for sustained inter-departmental coordination, preventive awareness, enforcement, pharmacy inspections and community participation to strengthen efforts against drug abuse and peddling in the district.
