Maligaon, September 1 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has made “encouraging progress” in restoration work at New Harangajao station, with Line No. 2 expected to be restored by September 5, potentially allowing more trains to operate through the Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section.
Around 500 personnel are working round the clock at the site, supported by 22 PC excavators, 12 JCBs, 18 tractors, pneumatic drills and hydraulic piling rigs.
The teams are engaged in strengthening the affected section, stabilising the track infrastructure and undertaking other restoration works, NFR said.
The New Harangajao yard has experienced continuous settlement and lateral shifting of the railway formation since July 20, affecting normal train operations.
NFR attributed the situation to a shift in the natural watercourse and changes in the local drainage pattern, resulting in heavy and concentrated water inflow from the upstream hillside and deep sub-surface water accumulation.
As a precautionary measure, train movement has been restricted to Line No. 3, where operations are continuing with enhanced safety measures. NFR said restoration work includes drainage management, dewatering and stabilisation of the affected formation.
Restoration of Line No. 2 by September 5 is expected to enable NFR to operate more trains through the section, while Line No. 1 is expected to be restored by the end of September.
NFR said all necessary manpower, machinery and resources are being deployed to expedite the restoration, with passenger safety remaining its foremost priority.
Train services further revised
Amid the restoration work, the NFR has announced further changes to train services in the Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section. Train operations are currently being maintained through Line No. 3 with enhanced safety measures, NFR said.
As a result, Train 15617/15618 Guwahati–Dullabcherra–Guwahati and 15615/15616 Guwahati–Silchar–Guwahati Express have been cancelled for September 2 and 3, respectively.
Meanwhile, Train No 15650 Narangi–Agartala Express on September 2 has been rescheduled to depart Narangi at 6:30 pm, while Train No 15646 Silchar–Charlapalli Express will depart Silchar at 10:10 pm.
