The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre Kohima, has placed parts of Nagaland under an orange alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next two days.
For August 30, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places in Mon, Tuensang and Kiphire, placing the three districts under an orange alert, which signifies that people should be prepared, according to the IMD’s colour-coded warning system.
Heavy rainfall at isolated places has also been forecast over Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, Phek and Zunheboto, which have been placed under a yellow, or ‘be updated’, alert.
On August 31, the orange alert will cover Kohima, Phek and Kiphire, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is again very likely at isolated places.
Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Peren and Dimapur, the IMD Meteorological Centre Kohima stated in a ‘Special Weather Bulletin’ issued on Sunday. The remaining districts have been placed under a yellow alert. The forecasts and warnings are valid till 8:30 am on the following day.
The Bulletin’ cautioned that intense spells of rain could lead to poor visibility, traffic disruption, waterlogging, flash floods, landslides and mudslides. There is also the possibility of uprooting of trees, damage to vulnerable structures and disruption to power infrastructure.
People have been advised to follow traffic advisories, avoid vulnerable structures and take shelter during thunderstorms and lightning.
It further advised against working in fields during thunderstorms and urged people to remain updated on weather warnings.
Meanwhile, in its evening bulletin, the IMD in New Delhi forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Nagaland, along with the other North-East States, from August 30 to September 5. Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are also likely over the region till September 3.
The bulletin further said isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from September 1 to 5, with isolated very heavy rainfall likely over the four States on August 30 and 31.
