On August 14, 2025, all Nagas who are in the Western and Eastern parts of Nagaland joyously celebrated the 79th Naga Independence Day everywhere. Which means the all Nagas are united in national spirit by accepting the Naga National Council (NNC) that declared the age-old Naga Independence in 1947 is still alive, neither surrender nor betrays the nation but unwaveringly defending the sovereignty of Nagaland up to the 79 years without any deterrence here and there despite the heavy odds of ups and downs political situation in Nagaland within and out during the past 78 years.
Secondly, the celebration of Independence Day means. all the Nagas, including young leaders of NSCN, rejected the policy of Isak and Muivah, which fragmented the solidarity of Nagaland in 1980, because they deviated from the Naga original stand enunciated in the Plebiscite of 1951, and started to stand for Suisa’s proposal. The Plebiscite of 1951 was an immutable pledge and a final verdict of the Naga people for the future of Nagaland to remain a sovereign nation as in ancient times. The Framework Agreement (FA) or 31-Point competencies proposal of Isak and Muivah was proof and evidence of the Suisa’s proposal.
For Suisa’s proposal, it was advocated by Maj. Proning, Muivah’s right hand that “If the Nagas have accepted the policy of Suisa, the Naga people would have achieved their goal long before. He further said, “even now it is not too late for us, if we accept the proposal of Suisa we can still achieve our goal very soon”. (unquote) That was on 12th August 1976 at Phalungtung Village East Khiamniungan Region, while we were gathering for Naga Army Goodwill Mission to China again led by NNC General Secretary Th. Muivah and Brig. Vedai Muire. Even the NSCN-IM accepted Suisa’s proposal and worked for it 46 years, but no sign for the achievement of Naga national goal is seen.
Thirdly, all Nagas rejected socialism, because by observing the Independence declared by the NNC, they accepted the principle of the NNC as well, that is to defend the sovereignty of Nagaland and the Naga traditional democracy (Nagaism). Because the Nagas did not stand or fight for foreign political ideology, but to defend our sovereignty and Naga traditional democracy is our bounden duty.
But Muivah unequivocally advocated in 1978 that “We must adopt a socialist form of government and our Chairman should stay in a Communist country, then only we should get full support from them”. (unquote) But up to 46 years, no Naga has seen any sign of support from a Communist country, instead diluting our national issue by a foreign political ideology. That was the main reason that the western democratic countries, including USA, did not support the Nagas. We need the support of Western democratic and Christian countries.
The enthusiastic celebration of the 79th Naga Independence by all Nagas, I am fully convinced that now the present young Naga people have completely realized that the mistake of our past leaders like Late Isak, Late Khaplang, and Muivah, and will march ahead in one accord to defend the sovereignty of Nagaland, and the Naga traditional democracy.
To solve the problem with the foreign countries must be based on the history as a sovereign nation, declaration of Independence. The history is written on the platform of NNC and without the NNC we have no history, and no way to solve the conflict. As all the Nagas are celebrating Independence Day, Plebiscite Day every year, that is in spirit of unity with the NNC and physical unification is needed in the interest of early solution to the conflict.
