Zunheboto observes Safer Internet Day to promote digital awareness and cyber safety

Zunheboto District celebrated Safer Internet Day with a program aimed at fostering responsible and secure online practices. The event was held at the DC Conference Hall. 

Delivering the opening address, Rahul Bhanudas Mali, Deputy Commissioner Zunheboto stressed on the importance of cyber safety in the modern era. He encouraged students to take the initiative in educating their parents about online risks, including cyberbullying and avoiding fraudulent online calls. "Protecting personal data is crucial in today’s digital world, and we must all exercise caution when navigating online spaces," said Mali.

A key highlight of the event was presentation by Pragati Wihangam, District Informatics Officer (DIO) of NIC, who shared valuable insights into various online threats and preventive measures. Wihangam’s presentation focused on common cyber fraud tactics such as phishing, hacking, spam, trolling, scamming, and identity theft. He also discussed secure practices for using UPI and Wi-Fi and emphasized the everyday benefits of the internet.

Wihangam highlighted a recent case from Hyderabad where a woman and her daughter were victims of an online scam, resulting in a loss of Rs 5.5 crore. The incident involved a digital house arrest, underscoring the dangers of cyber fraud and the importance of vigilance.

The program was chaired by L Chinglem Konyak, EAC, who welcomed attendees and highlighted the growing need for digital awareness in today’s increasingly connected world.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Akumlong Amer, EAC, who reiterated the program's core objectives- raising awareness about online risks and supporting privacy and security in digital spaces.

Safer Internet Day in Zunheboto served as an important reminder of the critical need for cyber awareness, encouraging individuals to take proactive steps in safeguarding their personal information and promoting a safer online environment for all.
