Mizoram "task team" begins border survey

Newmai News Network AIZAWL  | JULY 9   The "task team" of the Core Committee constituted by the Mizoram government to survey and inspect Assam-Mizoram border area has begun its task from Monday.   The Core Committee was constituted by the state government of Mizoram during a meeting of government officials and leaders of state apex student body Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) here on May 21.   Headed by Kolasib district forest officer Lanunzira as coordinator, the "task team" includes Kolasib ASO, Buhchang Ranger Officer, Vairengte Ranger Officer, Saipum Ranger Officer and leaders of MZP.   MZP president L. Ramdinliana Renthlei, who is the member of "task team" said they have visited Saipum and Saiphai villages on the Assam-Mizoram border today and interacted with the local residents there. He also said that the "task team" will inspect Zophai and Phaisen area on Tuesday. Survey of the border area will continue till July 18 after which the report will be submitted to Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla within July, Renthlei also said.   Earlier, the Core Committee had rejected the constitutional map and boundary between Assam and Mizoram drawn by the Survey of India in 1993.   Tension had prevailed along the Assam-Mizoram border when activists of MZP attempted to build a resting shed at Zophai near Bairabi town in Kolasib district in March this year.   Later, a joint committee was constituted by Assam and Mizoram governments under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to identify illegal structures along a disputed stretch of the 64.6 km border between the two states. The joint committee began its exercise on April 12. However, the joint survey was suspended on  April 18 following a dispute at Zero Point in Dholchera-Phaisen area.
