A felicitation programme of the three successful UPSC candidates from Nagaland was organised by the Central Nagaland Women’s and Students Association (CNWA & CNSA) at Don Bosco Institute for Development and Leadership (DBIDL), Dimapur on June 24. Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe, MLA and representative from 38 Wokha A/C was invited as the chief guest to felicitate the three individuals.
After formation of CNWA this was the fourth felicitation programme to be organised for meritorious students from the three federating tribes of the Ao, Sumi and Lotha. This was keeping in mind the resolution adopted during their executive meeting.
During his address, MLA Humtsoe mentioned that in any given endeavour, one has to possess determination, hard work and consistency to succeed. “I am sure that since all of you possess these principals in life that today you have become the chosen few amongst the whole Naga populace,” he said.
As a retired Nagaland Civil Service (NCS) officer with 33 years of service, he viewed that times have extraordinarily changed. Recalling his time being posted as an EAC in the far off regions of Nagaland, he looked back at those days of traversing across un-metalled roads and distant villages.
“With improvement in communication and the rise of the internet and other services, life has become much easier for a government officer now,” he said. “It is said that only those who run an extra mile ahead of others and slog and perspire more than the others ultimately attain success in life. I am happy to announce to all of you that you have perspired more than the others and that is the reason why you are successful to-day,” he added.
He further reminded them of the challenges lying ahead and to be vigilant, just and wise in their decision making. Above all else, he encouraged to put God first in everything that they do.
Yimkum I Ozüküm who secured the All India Rank (AIR) of 203 shared that he had faced many failures before clearing the exam this year. He also noted that to achieve a goal, one has to first find purpose and a reason so as not to be distracted by other trivial factors of life, in addition to knowing the value of time as well.
“I was lucky enough to have support from my parents,” he said which encouraged him to do better in his career. At the same time he admitted that it was also a gamble to clear the UPSC exam as there were many other capable candidates like himself who have the similar dream and zeal.
Imkongnükla Ao (AIR 723) meanwhile shared about her humble beginnings in her native village. She remarked how education was the only means through which she was able to climb up the social ladder. As an individual who did her entire schooling right up to graduation (Patkai Christian College) from Nagaland, Ao was able to clear NPSC with EAC rank 1 last year and now currently a UPSC rank holder.
On this note, she viewed that success does not depend upon a person’s background but through sheer grit and determination anything can be achieved. “I have come thus far by the grace of God so I give all honour and glory to Him,” she said.
W Aotula Ozüküm (AIR 874), her journey leading up to clearing the prestigious exam has been similar to running a marathon. “I began my preparation from 2016 and throughout this journey; there were many good days as well as bad days.”
“But it is crucial to pull yourself up and keep going along,” she added.
During the programme, Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) President, Khondao Ngullie shared his congratulatory message to the three candidates, while word of encouragement was given by Dr K Kalito Chishi, Principal, Zunheboto Government College.
