Despite having the lowest numbers among the States in India, Nagaland saw a 38.46% jump in ‘Crime against Women’ in 2021, as per the latest National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) report.
The NCRB’s ‘Crime in India 2021’ informed that 'Crime against Women,’ under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 'Special and Local Laws (SLL)' increased from 39 in 2020 to 54 in 2021, indicating an increase of 38.46%.
It must be noted here ‘Crime against Women’ declined from 43 in 2019 to 39 in 2020, however, it increased in 2021.
Overall, the Union Territory (UT) of Lakshadweep had the lowest number of ‘Crime against Women’ at 9 in 2021, followed by Ladakh at 18.
However, the rate ‘Crime against Women’ in Nagaland at 5.1 was lowest in India when postulated against the Mid-Year Projected Population in 2021.
The Chargesheeting Rate of crimes was also 80.4% in Nagaland against the national average of 77.1%.
Detailed analysis of the report informed that in Nagaland the crimes were mostly under the IPC such as Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty, Kidnapping & Abduction, Rape, Cruelty by Husband or his relatives.
In a concerning note, however, while the State had 'zero’ cases in SLL Crimes against Women such as Dowry, Immoral Traffic, Cyber Crimes and others, offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act , 2012 were highest under ‘Crimes against Women’ in Nagaland at 31 cases.
In addition, of the IPC crimes, ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ was highest at 11 cases.
Overall, across India, a total of 4,28,278 cases of crime against women were registered during 2021, showing an increase of 15.3% over 2020 (3,71,503 cases).
Majority of cases under crime against women under IPC were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives’ (31.8%) followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (20.8%), ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ (17.6%) and ‘Rape’ (7.4%).
The crime rate registered per lakh women population is 64.5 in 2021 in comparison with 56.5 in 2020.
The NCRB Report, under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, compiles the report annually based on information obtained from States/Union Territories (UTs) Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) / Central Police Organisations (CPOs).
