Mokokchung, June 28 (MExN): The Mokokchung College of Teacher Education held its 9th Cultural Day on June 28 at the College Campus, under the theme ‘Reclaiming Cultural Heritage.’

The formal session, hosted by Tosangla Chang, saw a fusion folk song performance by Cultural Troupe, Tongpu Pur, Ungma Village, according to a press release.

On the occasion, guest speaker Nungdokyanger Ao, President, AKM, said that ‘cultural heritage is a representation of our identity and how we hold on to the past.’ Speaking on the good that the ancestors have passed on, he recalled how elders have maintained societal connections through community events, and established Putu Menden, which according to him is ‘a system devoid of corruption.’ He emphasised that to know cultural heritage one must know their history and the philosophy of life, and continue to speak their mother tongue. He encouraged the student teachers to be honest and practice professional ethics, following in the honest legacy of their elders.

Following a cultural feast, filled with a variety of authentic Naga dishes, the informal session saw a variety of performances from the student teachers including folk song, folklore recital play, folk dance, bamboo dance and cultural attire display. The event ended with student teachers from various clubs participating in indigenous games such as bamboo cutting, bamboo stilt walk, grain pounding, and cleaning, the release stated.
