Learning fundamental of financial discipline

Dimapur, July 7 (MExN): Training on Livelihood and Financial management was held at the office premise of Community Development Foundation, Duncan Basti, Dimapur on July 3 and 6. The training was organized with the aim to instil ideas about the technicalities involved in the livelihood domain at the micro level and to educate about the fundamental of financial discipline, management of finance being one of the underline areas in livelihood management.

During the first session of the training, brainstorming exercise about the definition of livelihood was facilitated by the resource person from CDF team and the outcome of the definition by the participants was compared to the standard definition given by Conway and Chambers, popularly considered as the practical concept of sustainable livelihood for the 21st century, to reassure the participants about the practical meaning of sustainable livelihood. There after livelihood opportunity was explored under various sectors and sub-sectors where livestock rearing was viewed as one of the potential sector for engaging livelihood income generation. In tune to the needs of the participants Dr. Rovi took session on pig rearing management and poultry management. He explained to the participants in details about the clinical and care management aspect about the animal and birds that need to be addressed at various stages of their live. Besides he also helped in working out the economy and commercial viability of pig rearing and poultry farming in places like Dimapur.

In the post lunch session of the 1st day, the team of CDF took session on financial management for Non profit Organization. The resource person dwelt upon the importance of financial management in the Non profit sector such as NGOs/CBOs/SHGs etc. Practical demonstration on the maintenance of primary books of accounting like cash book, bank book, journal and final books of account such as ledger and supplementary register and programmatic records was also carried out by CDF team to help the participants familiarize with such records requirement in their respective organization.          

The second day of the training was held on July 6 where some interested participants were taken for a field visit exposure to Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency and Horticulture department Dimapur. Imrong an official from the department of Horticulture briefed to the participants about the function and use of technology in plant tissues culture and the methods and processes involved in culturing of various plants especially Orchid, Banana and Mushroom. According to the official, this activity has market potential provided if it is properly manage.  There at the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency, various form of bamboo based products making such as charcoal, Roofing sheet, Bamboo cotton, Ply board, Agarpati stick, Door and Window Curtain etc. were explained by the department officials M. Shatiba Asst. Forest Conservator and Er.Khugato. The participants were told that Bamboo plantation and its product has tremendous market scope and they are viable means of activity for livelihood income generation. 

The training program was conducted by CDF for its promoted CBOs under GRC sponsored program of Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Nidhi and Tata Social Welfare Trust. Dr.  Rovi (Veterinarian) and team from CDF were the resource persons in the training. The training was attended by 18 participants representing from seven CBOs/SHGs under Dimapur, district, Nagaland.
