‘Mental health issues affect individuals of all ages, genders and ethnicities’

KOHIMA, MARCH 20 (MExN): Kohima District Administration in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Kohima held a programme on mental health awareness cum counseling session for students and teachers under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao at Sechü Zubza Government Higher Secondary School on March 20.

Rhietuohunuo Whuorie, District Coordinator, Child Helpline, District Child Protection Unit Kohima gave an introduction to Child Helpline 1098 stating that it is a national toll- free helpline for children in difficulty situations. She cited how it caters to all kinds of children in distress, dealing with missing children, lost and found, runaways, sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children. She further stated that Child Helpline works with allied departments like District Administration, Labour Department, Medical Department, Police Department, NGOs etc. Towards this, she urged all the concerned citizens to dial the helpline number for any children in distress.

Speaking on “Mental health awareness cum counseling session for students and teachers” Mhaseto Rhakho, Counselor, Child Helpline, District Child Protection Unit, Kohima gave a detailed account of the definition of mental health and stated that mental health issues does not discriminate, it can affect individuals of all ages, genders and ethnicities. 

He further explained at length on the symptoms and factors affecting mental health and how schools can play an important role for mental health services. Dwelling on counseling, he stated that it is a means which can help an individual to find purpose and lead a better and healthy life. He also stressed on the importance and types of counseling and how students can seek counseling. 

The programme was chaired by Puotounguno Pier, Teacher, Sechü Zubza Governement Higher Secondary School and the concluding remarks was given by Lhoukuo Chüsi, Vice- Principal, Sechü Zubza Government Higher Secondary School.
