A total of 5,380 defaulters were caught without wearing mask in Kohima in the first week of the enforcement of mandatory wearing of face masks initiated by the Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP).

“The first week ended today peacefully with a total of 5,380 defaulters being made aware of wearing face mask for his/her own safety and the public at large. This exercise is taken in the interest of our society's safety and to contain the community spread of the COVID-19 Virus,” informed Neibulie Kiewhuo, President AKMWP.

While the exercise has drawn criticism from some section of societies, the AKMWP also reminded that the Government of Nagaland has ordered more stringent punishment not just for defaulters failing to wear face masks, but also  those flouting guidelines regarding the practice of hand washing, and maintaining social distancing in public spaces.

“AKMWP is encouraged by the concerned Government agencies to continue our efforts. Therefore, the same exercise will continue within the Kohima Municipalities untill AKMWP is broadly satisfied that we have achieved our goal of sensitising the general public on the important of wearing face mask in public places,” informed Kiewhuo.
