Nagaland: Social Welfare dept organises awareness seminar on substance abuse

Longleng, November 15 (MExN): One day awareness seminar on substance abuse for various Child Care Institutions, DCPUs and stakeholders of Longleng district was held at the District Child Protection Unit Office, Longleng on November 15.

A press release received here stated that Dr Joshua L, Jr Specialist, District Hospital Longleng spoke on the nature and types of substance abuse counseling in a CCI set up and the prevention and management of substance abuse. He said that it is necessary to change the patient’s perspective in order to intervene for treatment. The thoughts, feelings and behaviour of the substance abuser have to be monitored and understood. 

He also proposed to make a trigger list, a non use list with negative and positive consequences and also to make a contingency contract with the child patient. He concluded that family based prevention is the best prevention as well as school and community based prevention are also a must. “And also counselling is the best treatment for children below 18 years because there is less therapy for them,” he stated. 

Delivering welcome address, District Child Protection Officer Longleng, Ketobu Vitsu expressed gratitude for the support of the Social Welfare Department, Nagaland and various Home Proprietors, Superintendents, Child Welfare Committee, and Juvenile Justice Board Members of Longleng District for their participation and contribution to the DCPU. 

The programme was chaired by Protection Officer (NIC) Petekhrienuo Rame, invocation was offered by JJB Member Longleng Tainla Purniken and vote of thanks by legal cum probation officer Metshetsolo Mero.

Zunheboto: The department of Social Welfare organised a one-day awareness seminar on substance abuse for various Child Care Institutions, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and stakeholders of Zunheboto District including the child welfare committee, Juvenile Justice Board, staff of Child Care institutions and child welfare police officers (CWPOs) headed by Superintendent of Police, Zunheboto, Kupe Kapfo at SKK Hall, Zunheboto on November 15. 

Hutoi H Chophy, Master trainer on Counselling in Targeted International for Drugs Users and HIV & AIDS, counselling UNODC, EUREKA Foundation spoke elaborately about undertaking addictive, preventative measures and possible services. 

Dr Easter Chophy Ngullie, District Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) Zunheboto, spoke on the tobacco cessation and Nicotine replacement therapy counselling. Further Khetoholi J Yepthomi, Legal cum Probation Officer, highlighted on the roles and responsibilities of Child Welfare Police Officers (CWPOs), stated a press release.

Kito Ayemi, Protection Officer (IC), chaired the programme while Ruzonuo Rita Rutsa, DCPO, Zunheboto gave the welcome note.

Mon: The department of Social Welfare organised a one-day awareness seminar on substance abuse in the District at HPM Complex building with district Child protection unit, Child Helpline, Child care institutions and various stakeholders for instilling the knowledge and skills of treating the addict with behavioral therapies.

Resource person Longching Konyak, Field Coordination of Mon District De-addiction Center (JACAOA) presented a comprehensive and in-depth lecture on understanding addiction, nature and type of substance abuse and prevention of substance abuse. 

The programme started with invocation by Atsole Khalo; welcome address by Sevehu Chuzho, District Child Protection Office, Mon and vote of thanks by Wanloi Konyak. The programme was chaired by Pangnyie Konyak.
