Dimapur, October 19 (MExN): A State Level Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) Conclave was held with the theme ‘Transforming Market Linkage through MOVCD-NER’ at Angh House, Agri Expo Dimapur on October 19. This conclave focused on the Mission of Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern region (MOVCD-NER).
A DIPR report stated here that Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) are considered vital in making farming sustainable, promoting livelihoods, and enhancing the overall quality of life for those involved in agriculture. They enable small and marginal farmers and producers to access better prices, reduce transportation costs, and improve overall productivity.
Advisor for Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan was the special guest and spoke about the significance of FPOs in achieving better returns for farmers. He emphasised Nagaland's potential and the need to capture the opportunity to boost the state's economy. FPOs were identified as a major driver of agricultural transformation, and he stressed the importance of a well-planned strategy to increase income and produce high-quality commodities.
Market intelligence and linkages were highlighted as areas for innovation, with an emphasis on farmers working collectively to create volume and improve income. Yanthan encouraged FPOs not to limit themselves to the local market but to analyze and determine the demand for agricultural products and explore broader marketing opportunities.
He urged FPOs to cooperate, share resources, connect, and learn from each other. He expressed hope that with government initiatives, FPOs would contribute to returning the profits to the farmers and capturing a larger market share.
K Remphamo Lotha, Joint Director, presented the status of the FPC (Farmer Producer Companies) under MOVCD-NE. He mentioned that the scheme had been implemented since 2015-16 but this conclave was the first of its kind. He also highlighted various issues and challenges, including the sustainability of FPO/FPC after the program's completion, the continuity of organic certification, and the need for working capital. Lotha shared details about the completion of phases I, II, and III and the ongoing process of phase IV. He provided insights into contract farming and partnerships with various companies and the significant market linkages achieved so far.
The conclave featured success stories by FPCs like Wokha Land Organic Producer Company Ltd, Tseko Spices Producer Company Ltd, and Tribal Pitaya Fruit Producer Company Ltd. Additionally, there were presentations from service providers, and discussions focused on market potentials for organic products in Nagaland, addressing concerns of FPOs, farmers, and service providers, and planning for the future.
The event saw participation from experts in the sector as well as FPOs from different districts.
