The Nagaland Conservatory of Music (NCM) attested to the notion of the State being a power house of artistic music and talent, as their cast of Les Misérables delivered solid vocal performances, synchronised choreography and stellar acting during their first night show at Lorin Hall, Tetso College on November 23 last.

Under the tutelage of its Chairman, Lipokmar Tzudir and a talented production team led by Tiakumzuk Imchen, Director and Vini Assumi, Assistant Director, the musical has been set to perform for three nights straight from November 23 to 25.

Les Misérables is a sung-through musical, based on the novel written by Victor Hugo during the early part of 19th Century revolutionary France. The story follows the character of Jean Valjean, a French peasant and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail.

Among NCM’s most note-worthy performances include the character of Valjin, played by Ponatemjen Pongen, who dominated in almost every scene he was a part of with his high range vocals and theatrical execution. The other cast members were Hithono Achumi donning the role of Enjolras, Vivi V Yepthomi as Fantine and Tumchobeni Mozhui as Cosette.

Each scene depicted on stage showed the relentless efforts of the production team in their pursuit for polished deliverance of every one of the actor’s part. In particular, the cast’s performance of ‘Do you hear the people sing?’ genuinely captured the revolutionary fervour and a yearning for social change, as detailed in Hugo’s novel.

Although grandiose and strenuous, with preparations taking as long as nine months, NCM’s endeavour to provide a unique palate to the people of Nagaland will surely be a one for the ages.
