The Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) has closed down the Government Higher Secondary School Phek indefinitely as the government failed to fulfill the demands for relievers to make up for 16 staff in the school who were either transferred, retired or passed away.

While closing down the school, public leaders expressed their disappointment with the insincere attitude of the government towards GHSS Phek.

PTYS President, Neizote Venuh informed that the post for the Geography teacher was not extended and a Botany teacher has been absent from her duty for many years. He added that another two posts are going to be transferred out with posts, which would mean a shortfall of up to 20 teachers in the school.

“It is very difficult to comprehend how the students appear their exams without the teachers. Therefore the PTYS have no other option than to carry on with closure of school in demand for teachers to fill up the posts,” he added. He said that if any unforeseen situations arise, the government will be solely held responsible.

How long should the students suffer at the mercy of government's lackadaisical attitude, the PTYS questioned. It meanwhile expressed gratitude to the parents, public and well wishers who came and participated in the rally today.

“The protest will go on and rather intensify further and therefore every section of the people are requested to co-operate even in the days to come,” Venuh added.
