Silver Jubilee edition of Zuikhu Memorial Gold Cup underway

Niuland, February 22 (MExN): The Silver Jubilee edition of the Western Sümi Sports Association’s (WSSA) Zuikhu Memorial Trophy Gold Cup kicked off today in Niuland Town. 

Hosted by Niuland Area Sports Association under the theme, “Blow the Victory Trumpet” from February 22-29, a total of 11 WSSA units are participating in the tournament.

Gracing the inaugural ceremony and declaring the tournament open, Nagaland Minister for PHED and Cooperation, Jacob Zhimomi, emphasised the significance of sports and games in overall societal development.”

Terming the sports as a “great unifier” that brings communities together, he urged participating teams to be mindful of their responsibilities as brand ambassadors of unity. 

Zhimomi highlighted the transformative power of sports in improving lives. He also called upon all participating teams to display the true spirit of sportsmanship and learn from one another. 

Meanwhile, the Minister noted the ‘unprecedented changes’ in the realm of sports under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and encouraged youngsters to pursue their dreams with commitment and dedication.

Zhimomi cited the Khelo India games as an example of sports reaching grassroots levels, benefiting Nagaland with the construction of various outdoor and indoor stadiums.

Paying tribute to the pioneers of WSSA, he acknowledged their vision in creating a crucial platform to bridge gaps within and among the Sümi community.

He expressed continued support for WSSA, urging them to be torchbearers of positive change.

During the event, Zhimomi inaugurated the Silver Jubilee monolith, dedicated by Rev Dr Phugoto Sema, Executive Secretary of WSBAK (Western Sumi Baptist Akukuhou Kuqhkulu). 

The Minister was accompanied by Advisor IT & Communication and Economics, Statistics & Evaluation Sethrongkhyu Sangtam; Advisor Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Pangjung Jamir; and MLAs Dr. Sukhato Sema, Naiba Konyak, and Imtichoba Chang.”
