A soldier, posted in Nagaland, was claimed to have been recently killed in Nagaland. However, it was not a combat casualty but death by natural cause.

On January 3, an army havildar (sergeant) was reported by some news portals as killed in the line of duty in Nagaland.  This was in stark contrast to Nagaland not reporting any military combat or casualties since the Oting killings on December 4 and the subsequent incident in Mon town on December 5.

It was officially corroborated with military sources clarifying that the soldier, who hailed from Uttarakhand, died of a heart attack during a “training run” and not as inferred in the news reports.  According to one official, the soldier was stationed in the military post at Chakabama, Kohima district, Nagaland and, sadly, he passed away a few days back.

Earlier on December 31, 2021, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, through a tweet, had expressed his condolence to the family of the deceased soldier.  The tweet in Hindi, as translated in English, read, “My salutes to Havildar… of Anarwala, Dehradun, who made his supreme sacrifice in the service of Mother Bharati (motherland) in Nagaland. My thoughts are with the bereaved family and this sacrifice… will always be remembered.”
