‘Borrowed’ 20Mva transformer ready

Problem with circuit breaker delays set off

Normal power supply (meaning reduced load-shedding) in Dimapur is likely to resume in the next couple of days. The “borrowed” 20 mega volt ampere (Mva) transformer has been installed at the Nagarjan sub-station.

According to a Power department official, the transformer has been set into “bay” and all fittings done. Hope of normal supply resuming by Tuesday was though shattered as there was problem with a protective equipment. “The transformer is ready but there was a problem with the circuit breaker… Couldn’t charge it as a result,” informed the official on Monday evening.

A common yet very crucial part of electrical systems, power engineers say that circuit breakers act as a kill switch to protect an electricity distribution system from damage resulting from overload or excess current.

The official said that efforts to rectify the problem on Monday were unsuccessful. Without giving any dates, the official said, “We have to diagnose the problem and only then we will know,” while adding that work will resume on Tuesday.

Once rectified, the official said that the transformer has to be further put into “idle charging mode” for atleast 24 hours before it can start supplying.

Meanwhile, equipment failures continue to plague the electricity distribution network. Metha Sub-station, which feeds Dimapur’s urban core, was shut down for almost the entire day on Monday after a cable burst.

Another department official informed that an 11Kva line, which acts as the main incoming feeder for further distribution to other lines, was damaged at the sub-station at around 10:00 am. The official informed that it could be repaired only around 5:00pm as sporadic rainfall affected work.
