Chokri Area cultural day upholds ‘Friendship & Progress’

The 16th cultural day programme of the Chokri Area Games & Sports Association (CAGSA) under the motto ‘Friendship & Progress’ was held at Khulazu Basa village under Phek district on January 23.  

Kudecho Khamo, chairman of Entrepreneur Development Agency, Kohima gracing the occasion as the chief guest encouraged the youths to preserve and promote traditional culture and values.  

He mentioned that traditional culture is not just about folksong or dress but also the lifestyle and character carried on by our forefathers. While observing that the lifestyle has been changing rapidly, Khamo said that the society is at the point of losing our ancestral culture and traditional values. In this regard, he called upon the youths to restore and reform the cultural values and tradition. He called on the parents to teach their children the good character and values set by the forefathers.  

He said Chakhesang were known for being honest, hard-working and those who strictly follows the traditional taboos and further question if that culture still exists in the society. ‘Honesty is what we are lacking in the today's society' and acknowledged upon the need of honesty, we should continue to lead the society with honesty said Khamo.  

While encouraging the youths to empower their talents, he said laziness should not hamper the ability.  

He also called on the youths for a change and upliftment of the society. With the election scheduled in the month of February, he called upon the youths to choose the right candidate who can bring overall development in the society and urged the youth not to get carried away.  

Satahi Chuzho, CDPO Tobu, the guest of honour in his speech encouraged the gathering to promote more traditional games, while also stressed that local language should be given a priority stating that a lot of youngsters are unable to speak their own local dialogue and asked the parents to teach the children to preserve the identity and language.  

In the competition, Phusachodu Village Youth Organisation was adjusted as the winner of group folk dance and North Kikruma Youth Organisation as runners-up. The champions Phusachodu received a cash of Rs. 50,000 (running) donated by Lt. H. Pire Tunyi and runners-up received 7,000. In group folk song (indigenous), Thipuzu village was the winner and received Rs 25,000 while K Basa village in second place with Rs 7000.  

In individual category for indigenous game for Thügo Mesü (traditional fire making) Punüzo Chuzho was the winners and Khupo Vero in second place. In Udo küthi (showing bravery) Veneta Rhakho was adjudged as the winner followed by Ruda Kezo in second place. For Mecü Keru (Yodeling) Veneta Rhakho claimed the first prize and Puderü Medeo in second. The individual awards received Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively for 1st and second prize each.  

Earlier, the program was chaired by Vesekho Thisa, vice president CAGSA while welcome address was delivered by Vetazo Tetseo, President, CAGSA.
