‘Fruition of a long held public demand’

A long held demand of the public, the Nagaland state government has finally established a full-fledged police station at Chumukedima. Located at the Chumukedima weekly bazaar complex, the police station was inaugurated by the DGP LL Doungel on September 21.

It is the 9th police station in Dimapur district and will be headed by Inspector Vithalietuo Kire as the officer-in-charge. It will cover Chumukedima town and 20 surrounding villages.

With the police station established, the DGP sought the cooperation and support of the public in order that the police manning the station achieve its objective as desired. In an age when the nature of crime has expanded beyond the traditional descriptions, he said that the police doing its job alone will not suffice as it demands a supportive citizenry as well.

“Just creating assets is not enough. We have to renew ourselves so that we could be an asset and of real help to the public.”

With regard to the role of a supportive public, he said that it also implies the people point out the shortcomings too. “We (police or government) tend to be insular. We tend to be supportive of our actions. That is when the public got to point out,” he said on an introspective note.

Chumukedima Village Council chairman, Razouvotuo Chatsu termed the establishment of the police station as a long felt need and demand of the people. Ironically, he added that Chumukedima has got its only full-fledged police station 5 decades after the 1st battalion of the Nagaland Armed Police was raised and stationed at the present NAPTC back in 1964.

He recalled the public of Chumukedima urging the state government to establish a police station in the town during the early 1990s. He said that the demand was fulfilled; however, it was established at 4th Mile which came to be known as Diphupar Police Station.

Limasunep Jamir, Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, held that the police station besides crime investigation and maintaining law and order would also be service-oriented like any other police station. He said that the public living within its jurisdiction can now approach the police station for verifying personal credentials such as obtaining ‘No Objection Certificates’ instead of going to Diphupar PS four miles away.
