District Hospital Phek offers free diabetes screening and counselling

  Phek, November 15 (MExN): Phek district has observed World Diabetes Day on November 14 at CMO conference hall, Phek along with the rest of the world with the different departments of Phek town.   Speaking on the theme ‘The Family and Diabetes’ Dr. Ngopelo Kevichusa, Medicine Specialist District Hospital Phek highlighted the participants that this year’s theme aims to highlight the impact diabetes has on families and the role of family members in supporting prevention, early diagnosis and good management of diabetes. Diabetes is a major cause of premature dying, blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower limb amputation.   Dr. Ngopelo also spoke on the importance of diet by diabetes patient, regular medication etc. He stressed on the importance of four Ds for healthy living and prevention of further complications i.e., Diet, Diabetic diet, Daily physical activity and Drug.   Dr. Lanuakum, Program Officer NVBDCP and Dr. Limatoshi, Epidiomologist also spoke on the importance of proper Diet by diabetic patients, strategies for prevention and control of diabetes. They also highlighted and stressed on the complications and risk factors of diabetes. Awareness was also given on the importance of exercise by a diabetic patient and the food that a diabetic patient should avoid.   After the health talk was given a free screening of blood sugar, blood pressure, counselling and distribution of information materials on non-communication disease was carried out. Total of 59 persons were screened for Blood sugar and Blood Pressure. Suspected persons with diabetes and hypertension were also given counseling by Dr. Lima.
