Ensure free movement of people in Naga SAZ: EKU

DIMAPUR, MAY 22 (MExN): Following the Myanmar Army conducting military operations in the Naga Self Administered Zone (SAZ) of Myanmar, the Eastern Konyak Union (EKU) (Myanmar) today alleged that 20 people from Hoyat village were "arrested" by the Indian Army within the time period of 1:00pm of May 21 to 4:00pm of May 22.

The union, in a press release today, urged both sides to leave the public to move freely and in peace, while lamenting that two independent democratic countries are “disturbing and creating unwanted condition” for people in the area.

Recounting the series of events, the Eastern Konyak Union (Myanmar) said that after “heavy operation in the Chen Hoyat forest and new paddy fields” from May 16 to 20, the Myanmar army came to Hoyat village “with hospitality manner” and sent people from the village to carry their food items and “other eatable vegetables” from Monyakshu and Chen Hoyat junction.

As there were not enough goods, some 20 people were returning with empty baskets, the union informed. It alleged that these persons were arrested by the Indian Army, with the latter allegedly stating that the people had travelled “without taking the permission from Indian Army authority.”

The union further said that the public are unable to move from their villages and cannot go to their fields for cultivation. It added that the Myanmar Army is still in the Chen Hoyat village while the “Indian military are in the border of line.”

It meanwhile expressed gratitude to the Naga Peoples movement for Human Right (NPMHR), NSF, Naga Hoho and other organizations for voicing their concerns regarding the plight of the people. It urged all Naga organizations to work towards ensuring peace in the area.

The union further called for a halt to military confrontation, "firing, bombing and torturing of innocent people," while urging that free public movement in their own jurisdiction should be ensured without any prohibition.

Calls for intervention to stop military ops in Naga SAZ

The NPMHR and the Nagaland GBs Federation (NGBF) meanwhile today condemned the military operations in the Naga Self Administered Zone (SAZ) with the NPMHR lamenting that “the Government of India and the farcical new democracy Government of Burma/Myanmar, through its military might continue to snub, dishonor and show utter disgust for people who long for peace and Justice.”

It said that “the entire civil population is reeling under gun fire, bombardments and reign of terrors, which has been unleashed on them since May 16 and up till now, while many Naga leaders and villagers have been arrested and detained by both the Burmese military and Indian Military.”

The NPMHR informed that “as per latest reports, 20 Villagers of Hoyat are reported to have been arrested yesterday, the 21st of May, by the Indian Army while returning from Monyakshu, who were forced to collect food and ration from the Indian army by the Burmese military now camped at Hoyat.”

The NPMHR urged both the Government of Burma and the Government of India to release the Naga leaders and villagers, while drawing the attention of the Indian civil and democratic organizations and institutions, international communities as well as the United Nations.

The NGBF meanwhile said: “It is also learnt that at the behest of the military it has imposed unwarranted and arbitrary sanctions, fund cuts and disruption of essential supplies to the people which has resulted in untold misery and suffering.”

Pointing out that there was a ceasefire agreement signed in 2012, the NGBF said that the military operation “must be condemned by one and all including international organizations.”

“We want to declare that the Nagas are living in their God’s given Land either in Myanmar or India. They are aboriginal people of the land. No outside forces should even think to invade forcibly. Nagas are one irrespective of geographical boundaries; we are united to protect our Naga Nation and our political right,” it said.

The NGBF appealed to the international organizations to “intervene immediately and stop further human right violations in the name of military operation.”
