‘Gender disparity prevalent in Longleng district’

Longleng, October 10 (DIPR): Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) programme was officially launched at Longleng by the Deputy Commissioner, Y. Denngan Avennoho Phom on October 9 in the presence of the Government officers, NGOs, students, DBs & GBs and the staffs of DC office. The DC informed the gathering that the Prime Minister of India has taken the initiate to save and educate girl child in the country, to empower womenfolk of the nation and made an appeal to stop injustice and discrimination against women and child girl. Speaking on ‘Daughters of New India,’ Phom Baptist Church Association (PBCA), Executive Secretary, Nuklu Phom said that Longleng district not only records lowest sex ratio of women as per the 2011 census, but there is also prevalence of low child sex ration.  

He asserted that lack of platform for women, engagement of girls in domestic works and low enrolment of women in Government jobs indicates that there was discrimination and injustice to women in the Phom society. He also pointed out that a girl child usually sacrifices her education for her brothers but no male child sacrifices her education for his sisters in our society. Therefore, after emphasizing on “diagnostic and prescription” perspectives of women in the Phom community, he said that there was a gender disparity and education for girl child is very relevant. He appealed to all man to come forward to remove gender issues and treat both boys and girls equally.  

Advisor DUDA & NEPED, S. Pangnyu Phom in his message said that the Prime Minister has picked Longleng as 100 gender critical district across the country. He said he declining trends of sex ratio in the district was a wakeup call to all concerned and the time has finally arrived to change our attitude and give equal treatment and privilege to both boys and girls alike to be called a developed society. Earlier, the pastor Ao Baptist Church, Longleng proposed the invocation followed by presentation on BBBB program by CDPO Longleng Tauphong Phom. The ADC Longleng Temsuwati chaired the programme. Temsuwati also administered oath to the audience.
